Limoncello is an Italian lemon liqueur that is made from lemon rinds infused in alcohol, with a simple syrup added after the infusion. We usually use grain alcohol, though also see people use high-proof vodka. We tend to use Everclear, it is a higher proof than vodka and also has less flavor so all you taste is the lemon.
My dad would bring bottles of limoncello back from Italy, and we were very excited to find some bottles at the local Joe Canal's and other liquor stores. However, my dad kept saying that it just didn't taste as good as the homemade stuff they would bring out in jars to serve after dinner in Italy.
My cousin gave my dad the first limoncello recipe (the family recipe used at the restaurant she worked at). In an iced tea jug under the sink, the limoncello process began. That was at least 4 years ago, and all of the credit goes to my dad. We didn't really step in until now...
My brother tried his hand at limoncello this year, for Dad's birthday. He added the use of a Brita filter, which resulted in an awesomely smooth batch. I jumped on the wagon shortly after, and now Dad is picking up his production since he can't let the kids "show him up" at the taste-testing this Christmas.
This blog is just a way to keep track of what we're trying with the limoncello, and see what works. :-D
Though I do have to note, the recipe my dad started with is fabulous and doesn't really need and tweaking. We just couldn't resist seeing what else we could do with it!
